The 8th Souk

2A Du(b)ailities Competition, Dubai, 2009

The 8th Souk is a proposal for 2A's Du(b)ailities competition, which asked young architects to address the tension between supra-global culture and micro-ethnic localities in rapidly changing Dubai. The project reads Deira's network of markets as both urban infrastructure and cultural memory, then adds an eighth souk along the route: a cultural market where stories, broadcast, teaching, press work, and informal exchange replace conventional goods.

Using the souk's narrow spine and clustered stalls as an organizing type, the design avoids a single prescribed path. Visitors move through shaded passages, listening walls, broadcast studios, lounges, classrooms, and points of exchange, each operating like a stall for cultural knowledge. A contemporary mashrabiya envelope, developed from historical ornament, filters light and air while giving the project a recognizable civic figure. Photovoltaics, passive cooling, lightweight recyclable construction, and movable program modules frame sustainability as a continuation of local intelligence rather than a separate technological layer.
