STUMPS

STUMPS is a 2010 competition entry for a Holocaust memorial on the Atlantic City Boardwalk. The proposal transforms the language of the boardwalk into a quiet field of memory: a dense thicket of slender poles filters movement from the public promenade toward a clearing, neither fully enclosing the memorial nor separating it from everyday life around it.

At the center, tree stumps mark lives violently cut short, while the surrounding poles recall a forest that bears witness. The project keeps the intervention materially continuous with the wooden boardwalk, making the memorial feel embedded in its site rather than placed upon it. During the day, solar-charged poles gather energy; at night they glow, turning the field into a self-sufficient environment for reflection, gathering, and the persistence of memory.
